Chapter Four

The capital city of the Great Wolven Kingdom was both what Keyan and expected and not. Busy and full of noise, it reminded Keyan a little of the hustle and bustle of activity his home had once been. Of course, that was where the similarities stopped, because while his people's homes had been practical burrows integrated within the landscape, the wolves had chosen the opposite approach and built a sprawling, massive city.

It wasn't entirely surprising, given the mansion where Keyan had lived so far, but it still left him a little breathless and scared. He was very very grateful for Royce's presence, and the fact that Royce seemed both aware of his apprehension and determined to protect him at all costs.

In truth, he'd have probably been warier than he was if not for his new connection with Royce. Sometimes, it still seemed amazing that they'd bonded in such a way, especially since he'd previously believed that they would most likely be parted.

He didn't actually know what they would do now that they were here, but he supposed it all depended on the reception they received.

Their group traveled in two separate carriages. One held Royce and Keyan, and the other, the rest of the family. Keyan was thankful for it, since simply his mate's proximity helped him prepare for what would undoubtedly be a difficult confrontation.

As if reading his mind, Royce wrapped an arm around his shoulders and pulled him close. "It's all right, love. They won't hurt you. I'll be with you at all times. Besides, I might not really know Prince Phelan, but word has it that he's a good, reliable man."

Keyan would have told Royce not all rumors were reliable, but the truth was he simply could not see what reason a prince could possibly have for such an elaborate charade. Still, starting this morning, a strange feeling had begun to plague him, something he couldn't really explain. He shook himself and curled closer to Royce. "You're right, of course," he told his mate. "Conor seems to hold him in great esteem. I'm just being extra cautious."

"Nothing wrong with caution," Royce replied. After a small moment of pause, he added, "To be honest, I can't wait to get this over with. I want you all to myself."

The suggestive tone of Royce's voice made it very clear as to what exactly his mate would have liked to spend their time with. Even if he wasn't shy about his affection for Royce, Keyan's face flamed with a mix of embarrassment and arousal. His body always responded to Royce, and now that he wasn't worried about Royce's rejection anymore, it chose to show this at the most inconvenient times.

Royce growled lowly in his ear, and the sound sent shivers down Keyan's spine. It filled him with a wild thrill, partially because he loved seeing Royce display any sign of his shifter legacy. It had not been that long since Royce had discovered the truth about himself, but Keyan was proud that their bond had helped Royce accept the shifter inside of him.
